Reading Cinemas

In the mid-2010’s, I took on the role as the local Wellington designer for Reading New Zealand, operating out of Reading Cinemas Courtenay Central. Most of the design work and the brand identity was set out of Reading Australia, but content that needed a local context, was specific to certain regions of Aoteroa New Zealand, or wasn’t a requirement in Australia, was sent to me to create. This was during a time of lot of visual change for Reading Cinemas, going through a lot of look and feel updates which required quick updates to New Zealand artwork to match the identity coming from Australia.

The work for Reading’s included (but wasn’t limited to) nation-wide and site-specific signage, advertising, gift cards and vouchers, staff items, license-required certificates and signs, menus, and event-specific artwork.

Steer Burger

Formally Steer & Beer, Steer Burger was the restaurant at Reading Cinemas Courtenay. As the designer for Reading New Zealand, particularly Courtenay Central, one of my duties was to take care of the design for the Steer Burger restaurant.

Artwork for Steer Burger continued following the Reading brand, as set by the design team in Australia. This signifies the joint nature of both the Courtenay Central Cinema and Restaurant, with food in the Gold Lounge cinemas served from the restaurant, as well as now being able to buy Steer Burger food at the candy bar for your movie. With the renaming from Steer & Beer to Steer Burger, a brand refresh was required. Part of the brief to retain the ‘Steer’ icon, whilst feeling at home within the Reading Cinemas environment.

Artwork ranged from A0 to A3 posters, to pull-up banners, menus, and table toppers.
